How to Measure Carpet for a Binding Estimate

To estimate binding, add the lengths of the cut edges you want finished. That total is the number of linear feet to enter in the rough calculator.

Measure every exposed edge in four steps

The calculator result is a rough estimate, not a final quote, and the local minimum applies.

  1. Step 1

    Start with one carpet piece.

  2. Step 2

Measure each exposed edge that will be bound.

  3. Step 3

Add those edge lengths to get the planning linear footage.

  4. Step 4

    Repeat for each additional piece.

For a rectangle, count two lengths and two widths

Double the length, double the width, then add the two totals. That sum is the rectangle perimeter.

Measure each piece separately and flag substantial shaping

Normal straight cutting is included. Substantial shaping has a separate amount per linear foot. For an irregular shape, describe the piece and the shaping you need in the request form's optional note so the scope can be reviewed; do not treat the rough perimeter as final.

The binding calculator accepts length, width, piece count, shaping, and handoff choices.

Final review confirms the material, shape, cutting, finish, and scope.
