How to Connect a Stair Runner to a Hallway Runner

You can choose the same carpet for stairs and hallway or coordinate two different runners. Look at where each one begins and ends; we'll measure the connection before agreeing on the layout. They do not have to be one continuous piece.

Decide what you want to match

You might want the same carpet on the stairs and in the hall, or separate runners with a shared colour or related pattern. Consider the stairs, landing and hallway together before settling on either runner.

DMV Stair Runners handles both projects and can review one carpet for the stairs and hall. You can choose from the samples we bring or ask us to check carpet you already have.

Review direction, edges and the transition

With the carpet and layout in view, work through three details:

  • Direction: How do you want the pattern to read as you come up the stairs and enter the hallway?
  • Edges: Which carpet edges will remain visible, and how would you like them finished?
  • Transition: Where will each runner end or meet the next part of the project?

The runners don't need identical widths or a particular join just because the spaces connect. We'll look at the carpet and measure your home before confirming the transition, direction and dimensions.

Agree on what the project includes before cutting

Make sure the project agreement covers the parts you need. A complete project can include measuring, fabrication, binding and installation as agreed. If you are supplying carpet, have the material reviewed before committing to cuts for the stairs or hallway.
